About Us

OUR VISION

Fall deeper in love with Jesus and reach 1% of LA in His name.

We are a diverse, growing faith community, right here in downtown Los Angeles. And every Sunday, we gather together to learn more about God and the new story he’s writing in all of our lives.

OUR LEADERSHIP

Pastor Tom Kang

From his roots near the Big Apple to his home in Southern CA, Pastor Tom Kang’s journey has been a faith-testing, yet fruit-bearing venture. As former teaching pastor at Liquid Church near NYC to men’s ministry pastor at Saddleback Church, his coast-to-coast transplant gave way to founding NewStory Church in DTLA over five years ago, where he now holds the privilege to shepherd as lead pastor. Married twenty-four years to his sweetheart, Erica, they are blessed to parent three Jesus-loving daughters who keep them humble with their eye-rolling, face-palming responses to Dad’s Gen X attempts at staying current with the latest Gen Z quips.

What We Believe

God
We believe in one true and living God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Genesis 1:1, 26-27; 3:22, Psalm 90:2, Matthew 28:19, 1 Peter 1:2, 2 Corinthians 13:14
Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life on earth and voluntarily paid for our sin by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplishes salvation for all who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven where at God's right hand, He intercedes for His people and rules as Lord over all.

Matthew 1:18-23, Isaiah 9:6, John 1:1-5, 14:10-30, Hebrews 4:14-15, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Romans 1:3-4, Acts 1:9-11, 1 Timothy 6:14-15, Titus 2:13
The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and during this age to convict humans, regenerate the believing sinner, and indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.

2 Corinthians 3:17, John 16:7-13; 14:16-17, Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 2:12; 3:16 Ephesians 1:13, Galatians 5:25, Ephesians 5:18
The Bible
We believe that the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of humanity, and the only infallible rule and authority for faith, practice and life.

2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Timothy 1:13, Psalms 119:105, 160; 12:6, Proverbs 30:5
Humanity and Salvation
We believe that God created man and woman in His own image as the crown of creation that they might have fellowship with Him. But, tempted by Satan, they defied God by sinfully going their own way. Therefore, they became subject to divine wrath and, apart from the grace of God, are incapable of returning to God.

We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe. By Christ's death as our substitute, He revealed divine love and upheld divine justice, removing our guilt and reconciling us to God. Salvation comes only through God's saving grace--not human effort--and must be received personally by repentance and faith.

Genesis 1:27, Psalms 8:3-6, Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:23, Isaiah 59:1-2 John 3:16; I John 2:25; 5:11-3, Romans 6:23, I Corinthians 2:7-9, Revelation 20:15,
2 Corinthians 4:15

Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 14:6; 1:12; 10:29, Titus 3:5, Galatians 3:26, Romans 5:1; 10:9-10, 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10-14, I Peter 1:3-5
Eternal Security
We believe that a New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is a local assembly of born-again believers who profess to be saved by trusting in Jesus and His atoning work. In practice, the church assembles regularly to worship God, to observe baptism and communion, to fellowship together in the study of the Word and in prayer, to exercise their spiritual gifts for the edification of one another, and to bear witness to the gospel, both locally and globally.

The universal Church includes all believers of all ages. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church.
