Of all the topics Jesus addressed throughout His ministry, what did He speak about the most? It wasn’t money, love, or even prayer, it was the Kingdom of God. In fact, He declared that announcing this Good News was the very purpose for which He was sent (Luke 4:43).
In Part 2 of our series Teach Us to Pray, Pastor Tom Kang explores the second line of the Lord’s Prayer: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Unpacking the Greek word basileia (βασιλεία), we discover that God’s kingdom is not merely territory, real estate, or a political platform, but His active reign characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy. Living in the tension of the “Already / Not Yet,” we are not an evacuation plan looking for an escape hatch; we are a colony of heaven called to align our clocks with eternity right here in Los Angeles. And to pray “Thy kingdom come” carries a costly surrender: letting “my kingdom go”.
